![]() WOW- what a difference! I don't know if Bully Dog changed the tune settings on the update, or if it was just a combination of the CAI and tune together, but it definitely ran a ton better, and with no pinging at all. It was due for an update, and after downloading it I went ahead and installed the regular tune. Having heard that a tuner is the best way to get the most out of a CAI, I decided to bust out the Bully Dog GT and give it another chance. It gave me noticeably better throttle response and definitely some more power at higher RPMs, as well putting out some throaty engine noise. I was considering selling it at the time, but never did, and it so it sat for over a year buried under the mountain of ATM and gas pump receipts I somehow manage to collect.Ī few days ago, I finally got around to installing the Volant Powercore CAI I'd been wanting, and my first impressions of it were very positive. When I got back home, I uninstalled the thing completely and threw it in the center console, thoroughly disgusted. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if I was running 91. WRONG! The engine knocked so bad, even under light acceleration, it sounded like a diesel! It was so bad, I pulled over right on the side of the road and uninstalled it on the spot. I did want to at least try the extreme tune as well, and I decided that 94 octane would probably be okay, as it calls for a minimum of 91. Regular gas was over $4.00 a gallon at the time, so I was pretty upset that I had to use higher grade gas even though the manual required only 85. I tried gas from other places, then tried 89, then 91 octane, and finally got it to where it only pinged under very heavy load and hard acceleration. When I first installed the regular tune, I was running 87 and, although I did notice a mild power gain, it caused some pretty bad pinging under medium-heavy acceleration and when under higher loads. For those of you familiar with it, it has two performance tunes, the "regular" requiring 85+ octane (nobody in Western PA carries anything less than 87 anyway) and the "extreme" requiring 91+ octane. As for engine performance, though, I was unimpressed. I did enjoy playing with the display (all the years I've worked as a power plant operator have me a little obsessed with reading gauges), and I liked the firmer transmission shifts and the ability to reprogram the speedo for my tire size. I chose it over the competition mainly because it had a nice display for the price (albeit smaller than most of the others), but it also had some pretty decent reviews around some of the boards, including this one. A little over a year ago I ordered a Bully Dog GT tuner for my 07 NNBS Sierra with the LY5 5.3, which was bone stock at the time aside from a leveling kit and some oversized tires. ![]()
